KING ABDULLAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (2009)
Sound Design, Music Composition, 3D Audio Software Programming
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), is an international, graduate-level research university dedicated to inspiring a new age of scientific achievement in the Middle East and the world. Under a four-year agreement, the UC San Diego division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) provides expertise in visualization, virtual-reality and collaboration tools to support KAUST's ambitious plan to deploy state-of-the-art technologies for scientific research.
In support of this project, I developed audio content for immersive scientific visualizations and video playback presentations for KAUST's world-class visualization facilities, which include Cornea, the world's highest resolution and brightest fully-immersive CAVE environment.
In addition to developing content, I was involved in the development of custom software for automated tracking and localization of 3D video objects in immersive, multi-channel surround sound.
OSSIMPlanet, one of the demonstrations showcased at the KAUST inauguration, is an interactive model of wind patterns over the Arabian peninsula, designed to be displayed in fully-immersive visualization environments. In order to augment our understanding of the data set and heighten our perception of directional wind flows, we created custom software to track the trajectory of each wind element in a 3D audio space. The system runs in real-time and the audio software is fully configurable and scalable to work with any number of audio channels and speaker placements.
