AMERICAN DESERT (2006)
surround sound composition, sound design, mixing and mastering
Louis Hock's installation, American Desert, addresses the cultural and political symbolism of such an iconic landscape. He combines a diverse range of source material, night vision footage, and video documentation of his own travels in the American Southwestern desert.
I composed immersive audio content consisting of myriad sounds of the desert and its wildlife inhabitants as well as incorporating human footsteps into the piece which pass by the listener creating the feeling of moving through space and a more rich engagement with the work being presented. The 7-minute audio piece continuously loops throughout the duration of the exhibition.
The installation was exhibited at California State University of Long Beach from August 29 to October 15, 2006.
